When running 40 inch or larger tires on a Jeep JL, JLU, or JT, the factory fender becomes the limiting factor before the suspension does. As the suspension compresses, the tire contacts the underside of the fender, forcing builders to limit up travel to avoid interference.
This becomes a bigger issue on long travel suspension setups where the suspension is capable of more movement than the body allows. Without additional clearance, the performance of the suspension is restricted by the sheet metal.
