We love coming across customer videos of their build and Cody and the Kubicon have a lot of TJ content. If you are ready to start your TJ build, or ready for some serious upgrades, you should give this a read and watch the video.
The Kubicon Jeep TJ 1-Ton Build is leveling up with some serious protection—Motobilt boat sides and rocker armor are going on, and Cody takes us through the full install process in his latest YouTube episode. If you’re looking to armor up your rig, this step-by-step breakdown shows just how straightforward (and rewarding) the install can be.

Why Motobilt?
Motobilt’s boat sides and rocker armor are designed to provide extreme off-road protection where it matters most—your rocker panels. This is prime real estate for body damage on the trail, and Cody knows it. “This is where we’re pivoting off of trees and stuff like that, so it is imperative,” he says. With a rugged design and trail-tested durability, the Motobilt system gives you the confidence to hit the hard lines.
Step-by-Step: Cody’s Installation Process
Cody dives right in by marking and drilling the necessary holes. Most fasteners are 3/8" through-holes, but the system also calls for a couple 17/32" rivet nuts, which are clearly outlined in Motobilt’s install instructions.
To reinforce the install, brackets mount directly into the seat bolt holes, adding strength to the body-side attachment. Cody shows off the fitment and orientation, even working around his cage for a clean setup. “You’ve got 3/8" bolts all the way through the whole thing... it’s strong. I don’t have a doubt in my mind,” he says.
Custom Challenges and Creative Fixes
Because Cody’s running aftermarket body mounts with built-in lift, the supplied bolts were just a little short. No fault of the kit—just one of those moments when custom builds call for custom tweaks. A quick trip to Tractor Supply for longer hardware solved the issue.
Even with the adjustment, Cody was able to get the boat sides slid into place using a bit of ingenuity and a piece of angle iron to lift the body. “It’s a huge amount of added armor. It’s a step. And it definitely protects the underside of the Jeep,” Cody explains.
Final Thoughts
With both sides installed, the Kubicon is trail-ready and tougher than ever. Motobilt’s boat sides not only provide a beefy visual upgrade, they give critical protection where the rocks hit hardest.
“Installation is super easy. These are going to be really effective on the trail... where we’re not going to have to worry about ruining the body.”
